Paul-Émile Victor

Paul, Eugène Victor, known as Paul-Émile Victor or PEV, was a French polar explorer, scientist, ethnologist and writer, founder and head of French polar expeditions for 29 years. Born 06/28/1907 in Geneva, he died 03/07/1995 in Bora-Bora.

He passed the entrance exam for the École nationale de navigation maritime in Marseille, from which he graduated on November 26, 1928. He then did his military service in the French Navy.

In 1934, following a decisive meeting with the famous French polar explorer and commander Jean-Baptiste Charcot, he organized his first polar expedition. He embarked on the “Pourquoi-Pas?” and landed with three companions on the east coast of Greenland for his first polar expedition to the “Eskimos” of Ammassalik.

In 1947, after 13 years of exploration and ethnology, Paul-Émile Victor turned to scientific expeditions, creating the Expéditions Polaires Françaises – EPF – Missions Paul-Émile Victor.

From 1947 to 1976, he headed the French Polar Expeditions. Over the course of these twenty-nine years, 150 expeditions were carried out, seventeen of which he personally led and lived in Terre Adélie in Antarctica, and fourteen in Greenland in the Arctic.

In 1977, with his wife Colette and their son, they moved to Bora-Bora in French Polynesia, where he spent his retirement writing his memoirs and articles.

Paul-Émile Victor is the author of some forty scientific, technical, popular and adventure works, as well as numerous reviews and articles. In 1973, he was awarded the Prix de l’Académie Française for the body of his literary work.
