★ ICONIC PORTRAITS ★ by Arnaud Baumann

Georges Wolinski was born in Tunis on June 28, 1934 to a Franco-Italian mother and a Polish father.

His routine is meticulous: “Get up around 7:30 a.m., read the press, have breakfast, nap, supernatural appearance of an idea around 4 or 5 p.m., draw, have dinner. Habits die hard for this pillar of the Charlie Hebdo weekly, who arrived in France at the age of 13 and came to prominence in 1960 after meeting François Cavanna and working with Hara-Kiri. Editor-in-chief of Charlie Hebdo from 1970 to 1981, he knows the codes and workings of the magazine, which he helped to set up. In 2012, the BNF devoted a retrospective exhibition to him: Wolinski, 50 ans de dessin (Wolinski, 50 years of drawing), retracing his prolific career oscillating between humor drawings, colorful comic strips, political fervor, advertising posters… A true force of nature driven by the same desire: to make people laugh, to give them food for thought. A press cartoonist, Georges Wolinski also has some 80 albums to his credit, including compilations of news cartoons and previously unpublished comics, such as the famous adventures of Paulette. In 2005, he was awarded the Grand Prix at the 32nd Angoulême Festival.

Georges Wolinski, widower of Jacqueline Saba, marries Maryse for the second time. He is the father of three daughters, Frédérica, Natacha and Elsa-Angela. On January 7, 2015, the 80-year-old cartoonist succumbed to his injuries in an attack on the editorial offices of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo.
