Bernard Loiseau

Bernard Loiseau was born in 1951 into a modest family. Despite this, it was thanks to his mother that he became so attached to French gastronomy and decided to study cooking: he became an apprentice from 1968 to 1971 at the Troisgros brothers’ establishment in Roanne. At just 22, he became chef at La Barrière de Clichy in Paris, a restaurant where journalists and showbiz celebrities meet. In 1975, he was entrusted with the management of La Côte d’Or restaurant, bought by Claude Verger. He was awarded a Michelin star in 1977 and a 17/20 rating in the Gault et Millau guide the same year.

In 1982, Bernard Loiseau decided to buy La Côte d’Or. He succeeded in using the media to raise his profile and became very popular. This enabled him to open two restaurants in Paris, Tante Louise and Tante Marguerite, and to launch into ready-to-eat dishes. He was awarded his third Michelin star in 1991, and that same year published a book entitled “L’Envolée des saveurs”. Recognized the world over, the chef made the front page of the “New York Times” in 1995.

Bernard Loiseau went on to achieve even greater success, taking his company public in 1998. However, in 2003, while he retained his third Michelin star, his Gault et Millau rating was downgraded from 19/20 to 17/20. Gastronomic critic François Simon declared that he could go back down to two Michelin stars: this was certainly the reason for his suicide in February 2003.
