Making-Off
The Feast of Barbarians marks the final chapter of the “Trilogy of the Moderns,” begun with the work Decadence. In this commanding composition, Gérard Rancinan continues his bold exploration of contemporary upheavals and the metamorphoses of humanity. Here, civilization collides with a surge of primal, untamed imagery: half-human, half-animal figures, totemic masks, suspended creatures, and mysterious rituals merge in a whirlwind of raw energy.
Against a stark white backdrop, two rhinoceroses stand guard—both silent onlookers and implicit warnings—while the characters break free from all restraints, reconnecting with a primordial state. The table, a traditional symbol of sharing and community, becomes a battleground between destructive impulses and the desire for renewal. Through theatrical staging and abundant detail, The Feast of Barbarians questions our relationship to nature, spirituality, and the dark recesses lurking within each of us.
Blending provocation and poetry, Rancinan confronts us with the possibility of a return to barbarism at a time when the foundations of the modern world are teetering. The viewer is drawn into a visceral struggle between the quest for freedom, the thirst for power, and the necessity to reinvent the human condition. In this piece, the artist holds up an unflinching mirror, reflecting the tensions and contradictions shaping our era.
Métamorphosis
The Métamorphoses collection by Gérard Rancinan is a powerful reflection on transformation, both societal and individual. Through grandiose, meticulously staged compositions, Rancinan delves into themes of human evolution, identity, and the upheaval of norms in contemporary culture. True to his style, he blends theatricality and symbolism, creating intense visual narratives that provoke thought on the constant metamorphoses of our society.
Each photograph in the series challenges social myths, political tensions, and existential questions, making Métamorphoses not only a striking aesthetic journey but also an incisive critique of humanity in perpetual change.
