“Who’s That Nude in the Living Room?” is a unique artistic project which aims to constitute the largest photographic series ever made representing humanity as it is, in its most natural state, its nudity and its diversity.

Developed by photographer Idan Wizen, this concept of photographic art aims to bring together thousands of models, volunteers of all ages and from all social categories to constitute a huge gallery of portraits of men and women of today who have agreed to show themselves as they are, nude.

These photographs, in their multitude and the originality of each one of them, their dynamism and their naturalness, show to universal human beauty, far beyond the restrictive socio-cultural and aesthetic criteria of our time.

Anyone who poses in his simplest device participates by his own personality, his differences and his particularities in the universality of humankind.

Idan Wizen has chosen to exacerbate the true authenticity of each of his models, breaking their possible masks, exposing through each of them, the simple and nude beauty of human nature.

He also defies the usual criteria of nude photography with his shocking photos, with a strong artistic bias, where the spontaneous provocation of one model can interact with the cheerful and naive expression of another or the modest revelation of a third.

Through the uniformity of the beauty criteria of our society as well as its modes of expression, “Who’s That Nude in the Living Room?” opposes the multitude, the variety, the strength of character, the movement, the surprising and the natural to the state gross of mankind.

Each photo is unique just like its model and never touched up. This inevitably challenges us and creates in us a curious feeling of closeness, of belonging. Because these models are all of us.

Moved or upset by the freshness of a smile, the roundness of a curve, a playful look, a cry of defiance or the fragility of a silhouette, we would like to keep one of these photos with us, the image of a being among the multitude of the human race, a nude in the living room!

Everyone can be a piece of art

The project called Un Anonyme Nu dans le Salon (french for Who’s That Nude in the Living Room?), changes completely the vision of a naked body in society. The models are ordinary people and there is no casting. Oversized or skin-and-bone, midget or a giant, just a regular person from 18 to 99 years old, everyone is welcome. For most of them, the goal is to learn how to love themselves and to correct the disrupted and inaccurate vision of themselves.

The main idea of the project is to pay tribute to the uniqueness and diversity of the human race with its raw and unedited photographs. While fashion and advertising industries commemorate and glorify the perfect Apollonian and Aphroditian bodies, the artist stands aside of these dictates and has the courage to represent something different: a normal living body without any embellishment or beauty touch-ups. By showing his models without pageantry, and without erotism, the artist fights with one stone the growing puritanism and the omnipresence of pornography in our society, extracting at the same time the model from any socio-cultural background

The Boomer Collection

15th series of the project "Who's That Nude In The Living Room?", The Boomer Collection, embraces the classics and timeless of the 70s. Floral wallpaper, orange sofa, a pop and psychedelic style, flower power do you want some, all sprinkled with small cult objects from those years! Idan Wizen has chosen to bring the seventies style up to date, in an ode to kitsch and clichés! The colored line winding through the decor symbolizes the questioning and evolution of our relationship to our body, to our image, to our nudity, to our intimacy. Today’s reports are much more complex than those of yesteryear. Faced with universalism, questions of gender and race arise. Faced with the need to accept oneself, there is the omnipresence of the judgment of complete strangers on social networks. The liberation of the body is torn between a hypocritical and galloping puritanism and an omnipresent and invasive pornography. Nearly 3,000 different people undressed for the project, to evoke diversity in aesthetics, the place of nudity in our society, stuck between puritanism and pornography or even the attraction towards a being of whom we know nothing.

Singularity

Singularity. A point in space-time where gravity becomes infinite. A technological future where artificial intelligence exceeds humans. A system where the smallest change can have big consequences. A universe plunged into darkness, at the crossroads of theater and cinema, in which time and space cease to exist to make room only for the hero. This hero, nobody like you and me, overcomes his fears and societal taboos by discovering himself, by giving himself up to the eyes of the spectator. Anything that once seemed substantial loses its importance and becomes a shadow except for being admired. Accompanied by one or more window mannequins, these, like the term “singularity”, can take on several meanings. Multiple metaphors representing the shadow of the model, societal indifference or even the archetype of the idealized body. Sanitized

Composed of two complementary tones, a blue and an orange, both in the decorations and in the lighting, the Sanitized collection with its set entirely covered with plastic sheeting, is reminiscent of the unprecedented episode that our societies experienced: the Covid crisis and the resulting lockdowns. But if this first reading allows us to locate this collection in time, we cannot help but see a deeper, more conceptual and more critical meaning: the sanitization of our society and its culture. The smooth plastic perfectly represents the current desire to create a world without roughness, which does not bother anyone. A world that trembles at the idea of criticism on social networks, a world where the priority is no longer to please some people, but to displease no one. In the midst of this, the individual, the only element that is not covered with plastic, is daring to defy the standardization of our customs. And the choice which is offered to him is to accept or not this new world, smooth and sanitized, a choice represented by the duality of colors which come to illuminate the model. It is up to the spectator to choose the world he prefers. HB1736 - Collection Liberty by Idan Wizen

Liberty

The Liberty collection focuses on a theme very dear to the artist and found in all his artistic works, it is individual freedom. This freedom in general, where we will constrain ourselves, in the face of others, in the face of social pressure. The collection is strongly inspired by the English “Liberty” fabric, which gave the idea of the title. It is also a work on these purple flowers, which represent a nature altered by man, which is always in perpetual transformation, in evolution. The whole idea of this contrast between man in his natural state and this transformed, disguised nature is to show that we can evolve, that humanity can evolve at the same time as nature. The pink and purplish tones of Liberty are above all synonymous with serenity, peace and quiet. There is no editing on the photos. The flowers were really there. These are fabric flowers. We had more than 20 m² of fabric flowers in the workshop. And so the models lay down or stood directly on it. Purity

The Purity collection offers a simple and clean view of it. Almost drawn... Almost vaporous... An angelic air. Here is the spirit of this collection made without retouching, without artifice that places the models above all the distractions of everyday life, losing even perspective and gravity. The Purity collection was created between 2018 and 2019 in black and white genre. The spectator seems to be enclosed in a space, with no time and place, nothing comes across to disrupt the holy contemplation of the lines, barely drawn by human bodies. This collection offers a simple and clear view. We can almost perceive the angelic air emanating from the photographs. The spirit of the collection was to create something without retouching, without artifice in order to place the models above all the distractions of everyday life, abandoning even the perspective and sense of gravity. Artificial Nature

The Artificial Nature collection of the "Who's that nude In The Living Room?" project is a colorful collection, in which the model poses on a totally artificial setting: fluorescent green synthetic grass, artificial flowers, grotesque inflatable animals and a blue sky flamboyant made from a roll of paper. The artist wanted to create a contrast between the artificial side of the scenery, an artificial nature entirely composed of plastic and created from scratch by the human being, and on the other side, the model which on the contrary is in its state the most natural: naked and without artifice. The objective of this collection is to highlight the artificiality of the environment in which we live while highlighting the only natural part of the photographs: the body. This collection also reminds us that nudity is the natural state of humans. Backstage

The Backstage collection is mainly inspired by the 50s and 60s. The artist wanted to pay tribute to this period for several reasons: above all, it is a period when in the mentality it was a real liberation. On all aspects: on mentalities, on the liberation of bodies, on sexual liberation, on the liberation of morals. After centuries where men and women were imprisoned in their bodies, where the body was demonized, this collection is a beautiful tribute to that time, when we were freeing ourselves. On the Backstage collection, Idan Wizen used two graphic elements: first a black and white checkerboard, which was placed on the floor, and then a chaise longue with stripes. It was in a first point to have a game of perspective and a game of contrasts very interesting graphically. The second point was to evoke a duality: a duality of the world of the time, very binary, very marked. A time when there were far fewer shades of gray than today, where today's fights are much more complex, certainly less clear-cut than back then. And then, the last point is to make the different characters evolve like on a game of chess, like on a chessboard where we were going to move over the checkerboard. Pandemonium

Pandemonium is a serie inspired by classical painting. The entire collection is titled in Latin to recall the classical universe of past eras but also to provide an explanation and a greater intensity to the work. The title, "Pandemonium" comes from the Greek, it was the capital of the underworld. The artist did not want to talk about the Renaissance, nor the 18th century in particular, but rather take references from Greece or ancient Rome. The Pandemonium serie aims to underline a paradox: in different past eras, the artistic nude was always accepted, but never seen well. It was something that was tolerated, which was accepted in the eyes of society, which was much more puritanical in terms of its morals than today's society. In our current society, sexuality, the place of the body, nudity has been liberated enormously, and yet the artistic nude is still disturbing. It doesn't really bother others, it bothers me personally. We're not going to talk about it, we're not going to pose, dare, hide, as if there was something taboo, dirty, almost demonic. And that's why the artist really wanted to take up and emphasize that the artistic nude was the point of symmetry between the different eras. White Light District

"White Light District" marks the seventh collection of the groundbreaking art project "Who’s That Nude in the Living Room?" which strives to create the largest photographic series depicting humanity in its most natural state—naked, diverse, and unadorned. This unique artistic endeavor brings together thousands of volunteer models from all walks of life and ages, capturing a vast array of contemporary male and female portraits. Each photograph celebrates the unfiltered human form, challenging the narrow socio-cultural and aesthetic standards of today. Adhering to the foundational principles of the overarching project, "White Light District" features models who are new to posing, both clothed and nude. Open to anyone over the age of 18, the project does not employ casting, ensuring a diverse and authentic representation. Each session preserves a single image of the individual, unretouched, presenting an honest depiction intended for large-scale art pieces, measuring up to 80 x 120 cm. These photographs are not only exhibited in galleries but are also cherished in private collections. Lost Room

In the Lost Room collection, the models were projected into a rather intriguing universe. The title was inspired by a mini television series called "The Lost Room" which marked the artist a lot and which was a science fiction series where precisely, the particularity was to have objects moved out of space and out of time, and quite a bit of anachronism. The objective of the collection was therefore to do much the same thing by moving people out of space, out of time to take their picture in the simplest form. The play is not set in a specific era. It is a room without windows, but also without a door. We can't go back there. We can't get out there. They are just graphic elements, but do not necessarily represent a predefined or preconceived place. The objects will give meaning to the photograph, but he will have the idea of having a free interpretation of each. The artist has generally used them, in a rather eccentric, quite quirky aspect. An old coat rack is used as a spear, a lamp stand used as a sword, a piece of furniture that is not there at all to climb on. But which gives us precisely, a visual and a really different and really surprising aesthetics. Névrose

The "Neurosis" collection is part of the ongoing art project "Who's That Nude In The Living Room?" initiated by Franco-Israeli artist and photographer Idan Wizen. Obstination

The "Arles" collection is the third series of the artistic project "Who's That Nude in the Living Room?" created by Franco-Israeli artist and photographer Idan Wizen. Produced during the prestigious European Festival of Nude Photography in Arles, this collection stands out for its spontaneous and immersive approach, capturing the essence of the event and the energy of its participants. Photographed against a Van Gogh yellow background, in homage to the famous painter who left such a mark on the city of Arles, this collection evokes the warmth and vitality of his works. One of the most unique aspects of the "Arles" collection lies in its spontaneous creation. Visitors to the exhibition were invited, at the end of their visit, to participate in a photo session. The day after their photo session, the prints were presented in a new exhibition, allowing the visitors from the previous day to discover the created works and see their own image transformed into art. This dynamic and participatory approach not only captured intimate and personal moments but also created a strong connection between the artist, the participants, and the audience. The "Arles" collection comprises 25 photographs, each capturing a unique and spontaneous moment. From the inception of the "Who’s That Nude in the Living Room?" project in 2009, Idan Wizen embarked on a profound exploration of aesthetics in our society. At that time, beauty was still largely dictated by retouched and idealized images of models in magazines. However, Wizen quickly discovered that true beauty lies in the diversity of bodies: men, women, the elderly, curvaceous figures, and many other forms. The artist also delved into the concept of modesty. He observed a society oscillating between two extremes: an omnipresence of unsolicited pornography and a resurgence of puritanism, where the body was demonized and its display considered inappropriate. In his reflection, Wizen sought to understand what truly attracts us to an individual when stripped of all socio-cultural contexts—no name, no age, no profession. What is it that fascinates us about a person and makes us want to have them in our space, in large format, to gaze at, admire, and most importantly, tell their story?
