Marcel Carné

Marcel Carné was a French film director, born in Paris on 18/08/1906 and died in Clamart on 31/10/1996.

Starting out as a photographer, then assistant operator for Jacques Feyder, Marcel Carné directed his first short film in 1929, ‘Nogent, eldorado du dimanche’, a poetic documentary about dance halls.

A journalist and critic, he was René Clair’s assistant on ‘Sous les toits de Paris’. His meeting with Jacques Prévert led to his first feature film, ‘Jenny’, in 1936. Although their next film, ‘Drôle de drame’ (1937), was not well received, it sealed their partnership for the next ten years.

With ‘Quai des brumes’ (1938), ‘Hôtel du Nord’ (1938) and ‘Le jour se lève’ (1939), Carné established himself as a major director with a popular appeal.

It was the apogee of the “poetic realism” initiated by Jean Vigo. The greatest actors bring Prévert’s words to life: Jouvet, Gabin, Morgan, Pierre Brasseur, Michel Simon…

His films illustrate a certain Parisian picturesqueness, often copied since, and which can be summed up in one word in Arletty’s mouth: atmosphere.

Although ‘Les enfants du paradis’, made in 1943, remains his greatest success, he went on to produce such distinctive films as ‘Les visiteurs du soir’ (1943), ‘Thérèse Raquin’ (1953) and ‘Les tricheurs’ (1958).
