Michel Simon rue Saint Denis

The actor Michel Simon, whose real name was François Simon, was born in Geneva on 9 April 1895 and died in Bry-sur-Marne on 30 May 1975. The Swiss actor was one of the most important of his generation.

The son of a Swiss Protestant pork butcher, Michel Simon left the family home to try his luck in Paris. Caught up in the war, the young man had to leave his bohemian lifestyle to join the army. After the war, Michel Simon returned to the French capital. He worked as a photographer and enjoyed the pleasures of the theatre as a member of the Pitoëff troupe. He was approached by Louis Jouvet and excelled as a boulevard actor at the Comédie des Champs-Élysées. In April 1929, Michel Simon was noticed for his performance as Clotaire in Marcel Achard’s Jean de la Lune.

In 1925, after numerous successes in the theatre, the cinema opened its arms to him. He owed his first role to Marcel L’Herbier in Feu Mathias Pascal, based on the book by Luigi Pirandello. The transition from silent to talking films gave him the opportunity to showcase his acting talents. His wide range of acting skills and his extraordinary physique gave him the opportunity to play all kinds of roles. With fifty-five plays and over a hundred films to his name, Michel Simon excelled in dramatic, comic and slapstick roles.

His filmography includes many masterpieces of the seventh art: Drôle de drame, Boudu sauvé des eaux, Le Quai des brumes and Le Vieil Homme et l’Enfant.
