Raymond Devos

Raymond Devos, born on November 9, 1922, was a French humorist who died on June 15, 2006. From an early age, he recognized his gift for telling stories and captivating his audience. He enriched his knowledge by working on mime at the school of Etienne Decroux, and then took acting classes with Tania Balachova and Henri Rollan.

In 1948, Raymond Devos created a burlesque number, Les trois cousins, with André Gille and Georges Denis. But during a theatrical tour, this verbal genius discovered the absurd and situational comedy. It was in cabarets that he tried out his first sketches, including Le plaisir des sens, which brought him fame and recognition. Considered a rare phenomenon, Raymond Devos was always accompanied by a faithful pianist, Jean-Michel Thierry, and later Hervé Guido. The artist multiplied his appearances in concert halls. He constantly enriches his performances with mime, comedy, music, juggling and more. His physical prowess aroused amazement and laughter. Raymond Devos’ humor verges on the metaphysical, the mathematically fundamental. To this day, he is considered a genius with words and an astonishing poet, and continues to inspire many other artists.
