Making-Off

The Virgin and Child – Gérard Rancinan

With The Virgin and Child, Gérard Rancinan reinterprets a millennia-old iconographic motif through the lens of post-humanism and contemporary transformation. Inspired by classical depictions of the Virgin Mary, he deconstructs traditional codes to present a vision of motherhood shaped by technology and the sanctification of scientific progress.

Here, the Virgin is no longer a flesh-and-blood mother but an almost divine entity, frozen atop a golden pedestal like a futuristic idol. Her body, both organic and artificial, evokes a hybrid being—part woman, part machine. The child, encased within a translucent sphere, appears to have been conceived through an externalized gestation process, raising ethical questions about assisted reproduction and the dematerialization of motherhood.

The dark, cloud-filled background recalls Renaissance religious paintings, while the sleek metallic accessories and geometric forms ground the composition in a futuristic aesthetic. This contrast between tradition and modernity underscores the ambiguity of progress: does it promise transcendence, or does it herald the alienation of the body and nature?

Through this masterful composition, Rancinan challenges us to reflect on the gradual dehumanization of birth, the sanctification of biotechnological control, and the myth of an idealized, detached maternity. The Virgin and Child emerges as a visual manifesto, oscillating between fascination and unease regarding the future of humanity.

Métamorphosis

Métamorphosis

The Métamorphoses collection by Gérard Rancinan is a powerful reflection on transformation, both societal and individual. Through grandiose, meticulously staged compositions, Rancinan delves into themes of human evolution, identity, and the upheaval of norms in contemporary culture. True to his style, he blends theatricality and symbolism, creating intense visual narratives that provoke thought on the constant metamorphoses of our society.

Each photograph in the series challenges social myths, political tensions, and existential questions, making Métamorphoses not only a striking aesthetic journey but also an incisive critique of humanity in perpetual change.
